Have you considered looking on Craigslist for people in need of a roommate? It might solve more than one of the apartment-type problems you've mentioned.
I seriously DO NOT want to live with a stranger. I'd rather get an apartment in Bushwick than have to live with someone I don't know and can't predict. I also hate the feeling that I'm living in someone else's space -- and that's the way I'd feel if I moved into a room in someone else's apartment.
I was actually avoiding the thread because, although I have a lot to say, I don't have the energy to engage in the debate. (Nor the time, really, since work is crazy.) So... amen!
